Rank & points

How games earn points, and what each rank needs.

How does a game change my points?#

Rule of thumb: a win adds 20 points, a loss takes 10.

Everyone starts at 1000 points. When an online game ends, every player in it gets a result: a win if your team won, a loss if it lost. Nobody's loss pays for anyone else's win. Each player's change is worked out on its own.

A draw changes no points, but the game still counts as played.

Why did I win more (or less) than 20?#

A win is worth more when the game was harder or bigger:

  • Games against people pay more. Beat other players and the win is worth +25% more. If only some of your opponents are people, you get part of that bonus.
  • Bigger games pay more. A bigger setup is worth more than a 1v1. A free-for-all win is worth more still, because only one player wins. The table below shows the points.
  • Strong opposition pays more. The more your opponents' points are above yours, the more a win is worth, by up to 25%. Bots count at a fixed strength: Easy is below Normal, and Hard is above.

Win points in a free-for-all, before the other bonuses:

PlayersWin multiplierWin pointsMost wins over people
3×1.75352
4×2.5503
5×3.25654

A loss starts at 10 points and is nudged by the same strength factor: losing to weaker opposition costs up to 25% more, and losing to stronger opposition costs up to 25% less. Bigger games and games against people never make a loss cost more. You can't fall below zero.

How does a free-for-all count?#

Rule of thumb: one player wins. Everyone else loses, second place included.

A free-for-all win counts one win over people for every person you beat, up to one fewer than the players in the game (the last column of the table above). Bots you beat don't count. In a team game, a win counts as one win over people however many you beat.

Why didn't a win over the same player count?#

Rule of thumb: beating the same person counts 3 times a week.

After 3 wins over one person in 7 days, more wins over them that week score no points and don't count as wins over people. The win still counts as a game played. If other opponents were in the game too, the win is scored as if that person weren't there. Wins over bots are never capped.

Does quitting or conceding cost me?#

Rule of thumb: quitting is always a loss, even if your team goes on to win.

When you quit, a bot takes your seat and plays on, but your result is a loss. Conceding is a loss too, once your team is out. If a game dies with no winner (every player idle, or no one left who can play), everyone in it takes the plain 10. A game that dies before turn 10 is the short-game case below.

Why didn't my quick win count?#

Rule of thumb: a win needs at least 10 turns.

If a game ends sooner, whether by concession or any other way, nobody gets a win. Players who quit or conceded still take their loss. Everyone else's points stay as they were, and the game doesn't count toward their games played.

How do ranks work?#

Each rank needs three things: enough points, enough finished games, and, from Lieutenant up, enough wins over people. You hold the highest rank whose needs you meet. Games and wins only ever go up, so only losing points can cost you a rank.

To stop you flickering between two ranks, you keep a rank until your points drop a little below its line.

Short games count only for players who quit or conceded. Games against bots count, but only wins against people go toward the officer ranks.

How is the leaderboard ordered?#

The leaderboard lists the top 50 players by points, highest first. Players with the same points share a place and are listed by name, and the next place skips past them: two players tied for 2nd are followed by 4th.
