Every Contact Front map is cut from real borders. Provinces follow real regions, so the terrain is where you'd expect it: rivers to cross, forests and mountains that favour whoever holds them, and cities that pay for new armies.
Each map starts the sides apart, with a band of neutral cities between them. Those cities are held by gray garrisons and belong to whoever takes them first. Where the band is thin, the fighting starts on turn two. Where it's wide, the first few turns are a race.
