Supply & cutting off

Armies need a line home. Cut the enemy's.

What is supply?#

Rule of thumb: a stack is in supply if your team's provinces connect it to one of your team's cities.

The connection runs through provinces your team owns, rural ones included. It doesn't matter how far the stack is from the city, only that the chain of provinces is unbroken. Supply is checked after the moves and battles of each turn.

What happens to a stack that's cut off?#

Rule of thumb: cut-off stacks fight at half strength, then start to waste away.

  • A stack out of supply fights at half strength, artillery support included.
  • After 2 turns out of supply, it loses 1 unit every turn.
  • Cut-off stacks are drawn hatched on the map.

Reconnect the chain and the stack is back to full strength next time supply is checked.

How do I cut an enemy army off?#

Rule of thumb: take the provinces behind an army, not just the ones in front of it.

A province changes hands when only one team's ground units stand in it. Send a small stack round the side into the provinces behind the enemy army. If every chain from that army to its cities is broken, the whole army is cut off, and every battle it fights is at half strength.

How do I avoid being cut off?#

  • A province stays yours after you leave it, until enemy ground units take it. A deep thrust is safe while the provinces behind it are still yours.
  • Watch for small enemy stacks slipping behind your front. Retake those provinces quickly.
  • Keep thrusts short of where you can't hold the provinces behind them.

Does supply affect neutral garrisons?#

No. Neutral garrisons never move and are exempt from supply.
